Job Overview

Hoxworth Blood Center (HBC) was founded in 1938 and serves more than 30 hospitals in 18 counties in Southwestern Ohio, Northern Kentucky, and Southeastern Indiana. Annually, HBC collects more than 100,000 units of blood from local donors to help save the lives of patients in area hospitals. HBC is located within the University of Cincinnati (UC), College of Medicine (COM). UC COM has a reputation for training best-in-class health care professionals and developing cutting-edge procedures and research that improves the health and clinical care of patients. In partnership with the UC Health academic healthcare system and Cincinnati Children's Hospital Medical Center, UC COM's faculty and staff are transforming the world of medicine every day.

Hoxworth Blood Center, University of Cincinnati, seeking a full-time Director of Cellular Therapies to provide oversight of clinical, administrative, and resource management of the Cellular Therapies department to support local HEME/ONC BMT programs and direct, coordinate, develop, and continually improve operations. Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, as well as Hoxworth Blood Center Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).

Essential Functions

  • Advance the clinical program of excellence in Cell Therapies procedures.
  • Educate rotating visitors and fellows on the core principles and basic practices of Cell Therapy.
  • Direct laboratory functions, including but not limited to, cell processing and infusion procedures and calculations, aseptic handling of products, weekly scheduling, and data analysis.
  • Collaborate with faculty/Division Director/Medical Director to develop and manufacture novel cell therapies including CAR T-cells.
  • Assist the Division Director/Medical Director with developing strategic opportunities to improve and optimize operations.
  • Demonstrate extensive working and theoretical knowledge of current stem cell transplantation and cellular therapies including but not limited to procurement, processing, testing, storage, and transplantation.
  • Responsible for writing and revising standard operating procedures and policies ensuring compliance with current Good Laboratory Practice (cGTP) regulations and applicable accreditation agency standards, including but not limited to FDA, FACT, CAP, and CLIA.
  • Oversee proper documentation of deviations, investigations and associated corrective actions.
  • Assist the Division Director/Medical Director with preparation of the departmental budget and monitor annual expenditures to ensure adherence to budget.
  • Develop, implement, and manage staff training, development, appraisal and technical proficiency, monitoring training and competency to ensure regulatory compliance.
  • Work closely with institutional facilities to ensure that the facility is maintained according to FDA guidelines, cGTP and GMP requirements. Work with vendors to ensure the necessary services around equipment, reagents and supplies meet all regulatory requirements.
  • Provide technical leadership and direction to maintain compliance with national and international regulatory standards and maintain accreditation and license status.
  • Develop and maintain interdepartmental partnerships to work collaboratively to provide effective services.
  • Provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.).

Required Education

Bachelor's Degree.

Required Trainings/Certifications

Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certified by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP).

Required Experience

Eight Plus (8+) years of experience in clinical processing of cellular products.  Experience must also include a minimum of three (3) years of experience in a supervisory role.
