Job Description



Position Overview: 

The Special Education Coordinator (SEC) is responsible for ensuring that all students receiving special education services receive comprehensive, compassionate, and equitable services to achieve significant academic gains for all our students with IEPs.

The Special Education Coordinator will also be responsible for supporting Student Support Team (SST) Teachers in delivering data-driven, high-quality special education services.

The Special Education Coordinator will work collaboratively with all SST Teammates (Director of Student Support Services, Psychologist, SST teachers, Paraeducators, SLP, PT, and OT), Service Providers, and families to provide a strong educational program for all KIPPsters. 

The Special Education Coordinator will coach SST teachers and paraeducators and lead the implementation and management of KIPP Tulsa’s special education policies and procedures by driving results and managing people.

Key SEC Leadership Skills: 

Collaborate with the Director of Student Support Services to:

  • Execute consistent and effective coaching cycle with SST teachers (aligned to KIPP Tulsa’s coaching focus) 
  • Develop and lead special education professional development with general education teachers and special education teachers 
  • Analyze student achievement data (Progress Monitoring & Checkpoint/Unit) and develop strategic plans that target student/teacher gaps 
  • Manage a team of SST Members to achieve rigorous outcomes 
  • Track and maintain suspension of students with an IEP
  • Hold and lead manifestation determination meetings 
  • Maintain organization systems for IEP Meetings & IEP Student Records maintenance 
  • Execute system audits for IEP Meetings & Student Records 
  • Communicate and collaborate with families to ensure deep partnership & transparency in supporting students with IEP 

Special Education Coordinator Instructional Duties: 

  • Engage in observation, real-time coaching & feedback cycle for ALL SST Teachers and paraeducators on Instructional Coaching caseload 
  • Plan, Prepare and execute weekly coaching check-ins with ALL SST Teachers on Instructional Coaching caseload 
  • Review and provide feedback on all IEPs, modified lesson plans, and student materials for all SST teachers
  • Develop, maintain, and audit SST teacher urgent schedules to ensure maximized instructional minutes aligned to IEP minutes
  • Manage SST teachers to collect, analyze, and inform re-teach plans with progress monitoring data
  • Meet weekly with the DSSS to collaborate on instructional goals with special education teachers

Special Education Coordinator Compliance Duties:

  • Train case managers on how to effectively write an IEP, Track IEP Goals & hold IEP meetings 
  • Attend all IEP meetings within the timeline & provide feedback to case managers on 100% of IEPs before finalizing IEPS in EdPlan.
  • Develop, maintain, and share the IEP calendar with all key stakeholders to ensure case managers are able to execute 100% of IEP meetings within the timeline.
  • Ensure that all teachers are aware of scholars' IEP accommodations and modifications. 
  • Manage all service providers through weekly check-ins to ensure all compliance outcomes within the timeline (OT, PT, Speech). 
  • Collaborate with the Manager of ELL & Special Programs to coordinate and manage ESL & AFS/BSP services.
  • Collaborate with the Director of Student Support to ensure a clear alignment of vision, mission, and yearly WIG goals are executed.

  • Bachelor's Degree (required); Master’s Degree in special education (highly preferred). 
  • A minimum of 3 years teaching in a low-income school with demonstrated exemplary student results. 
  • At least 3 years of work in a special education leadership role in a low-income school with demonstrated exemplary student results. 
  • Ability to effectively manage instructional and non-instructional personnel. 
  • Ability to evaluate instructional programs and teaching effectiveness.
  • Excellent communication, public relations, and interpersonal skills. 
  • Ability to implement effective business systems that ensure proper stewardship of school funds. 
  • Ability to exercise excellent judgment in decision-making.
  • Knowledge of the selection, training, and supervision of personnel. 
  • Knowledge of the laws, rules, procedures, and programs specifically related to the operation of a special education program.

This is a Full-Time, 10-month teaching position.
