Job Description

SCENIC DRESSER

A theatrical scenic set dresser is responsible for physically "dressing" a stage set by placing and arranging furniture, props, and decorative items, like curtains, paintings, and rugs, according to the scenic designer's vision, ensuring the set accurately reflects the play's time period and environment, while primarily focusing on items that actors do not directly interact with; essentially creating the background details of each scene on stage. 

Key responsibilities of a theatrical scenic set dresser:

  • Interpreting the design:
    Carefully study the scenic designer's plans and sketches to understand each set's desired look and feel. 
  • Meet with the scenic designer and walk through the design scene by scene.
  • Sourcing props:
    Finding, acquiring, and preparing various decorative items like furniture, artwork, curtains, and other set dressings needed for the production. 
  • Placement and arrangement:
    Positioning props and furniture on the set according to the design, ensuring proper spacing and visual balance. 
  • Maintaining continuity:
    Ensuring consistency of set details between scenes and throughout the production run. 
  • Detailing the set:
    Adding subtle elements like personal items, books, or clutter to enhance realism and character development. 
  • Collaborating with other departments:
    Working closely with the scenic designer, props master, and stage management to execute the set design. 
  • Physical set-up:
    Installing and securing set dressings on the stage, including hanging curtains, placing rugs, and mounting artwork. 
  • Maintaining set integrity:
    Inspecting the set before each performance and making necessary repairs or adjustments to keep it looking pristine. 

Skills and qualities needed for a theatrical scenic set dresser:

  • Attention to detail:
    A keen eye for visual aesthetics and the ability to notice minor inconsistencies 
  • Creativity:
    Understanding how to use props and set dressings to convey the story and setting effectively 
  • Organizational skills:
    Managing a large inventory of props and ensuring they are appropriately labeled and stored 
  • Physical ability:
    Lifting and moving heavy furniture and set pieces min of 50lbs
  • Technical skills:
    Basic knowledge of construction techniques and how to safely install set elements Collaboration skills:
    Working effectively with other members of the production team to achieve a unified vision
