Job Description

Summary

The Resident Aide/Certified Nursing Assistant provides assistance with the activities of daily living to the residents in accordance with standards established by The Cove administrative policies and State regulations for the appropriate license held by the assisted living; ensures a safe, sanitary, and comfortable environment for residents, visitors, and the public; and projects a positive and professional image to residents, resident’s family, guests, visitors, potential residents, and co-workers. 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  1. Provides resident care such as assistance with bathing, dressing, hair care, oral hygiene, grooming, toileting, encouraging residents to participate in their own care as able per their limitations.
  2. Performs personal care services to meet individual needs and preferences.
  3. Ability to make beds and change bed linens.
  4. Communicates and explains procedures and activities enhancing residents’ dignity and respect.
  5. Assist with showers and/or bathe residents according to shower schedule.
  6. Encourage residents to participate in activities and special programs. Assist with activities as needed.
  7. Respond to emergency calls and requests; answer call lights promptly regardless of team assignment.
  8. Ability to politely answer telephone, record message, and relay message to appropriate staff member as needed.
  9. Document care provided and note unusual or significant changes in physical, mental or behavioral conditions. Report observations/changes to Resident Care Manager.
  10. Comply with all resident rights and confidentiality. Ensure privacy and confidentiality of information and records pertaining to the residents, employees, and the company.
  11. Assist residents with self-administration of medications if trained to do so. Promptly and accurately document medications taken or refused on MOR. Ensure medication storage carts are locked at all times and no medications are unattended.
  12. Successfully complete a 4-hour “assistance with self-administration and medication management in an assisted living facility” training within 6 months of hire.
  13. Complete drug count with adjacent shift. Report any discrepancies immediately to the Resident Care Manager.
  14. Provide effective communication to resident aide at the adjacent shift to encourage continuity of care.
  15. Assist with maintaining clean and neat resident rooms. Ensure rooms are free from smell at all times. 
  16. Empty resident trash at the end of shift assignment.
  17. Follow aseptic technique and Universal Precautions in resident care.
  18. Assist residents to the dining room for meals as needed.
  19. Ensure building is safe and secure at all times. Lock doors if appropriate for assigned shift.
  20. Encourages residents to drink fresh water and nourishment between meals.
  21. Ability to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
  22. Ability to physically assist with transferring and positioning residents.

  3. Maintains a safe and secure working environment and practice safe working habits.
  4. Complies with the attendance policy.
  5. Maintains a neat appearance, good personal hygiene, and appropriate attire.
  6. Participates in training, in-services, and attends meetings as required.
  7. Assists with special projects as assigned and perform other duties as assigned.

QUALIFICATIONS

To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Must be aware of and understand the needs of the elderly. Must have a natural personality to feel empathy and consideration for the elderly.

Education and/or Experience

  • High school diploma or General Education Degree (GED); C.N.A. certification preferred; experience working in a nursing home, assisted living, or related health care environment preferred.

Language Skills

  • Ability to read, write and speak English; ability to understand verbal and written instructions.
  • Ability to document accurately. 
  • Ability to communicate well with an elderly population.

Reasoning Ability

  • Ability to apply common sense in understanding and carrying out instructions. 
  • Ability to recognize hazardous conditions and report to management immediately. 
  • Ability to make appropriate decisions of when to call for assistance.

Mathematical Ability

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide accurately.
